ALERA, in conjunction with State and Territory societies, is excited to launch the 2025 National Professional Development Program, featuring a series of four lunchtime masterclasses on Unfair Dismissal. These webinars are free for all industrial relations society members.

We invite you to join us for the first session in March, presented by Commissioner Mark Perica AM, on the jurisdictional elements of bringing an unfair dismissal claim. The session will include a live Q&A, providing an opportunity for members to engage directly with the Commissioner.

When: Friday, 28 March

Where: Zoom Webinar (Online)

Time: 1:00 – 2:00 PM (AEDT)

Cost: Complimentary for all IRS members nationally

Commissioner Mark Perica AM graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Jurisprudence in 1986 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1987, later earning a Master of Arts from the University of Melbourne (1994) and a Master of Laws from Monash University (1996).

His legal career began at Mallesons Stephen Jaques in Perth, where he practiced across various areas before focusing on industrial and employment law. He later worked at Freehill Hollingdale & Page and Gill Kane & Brophy, advising and representing employers, workers, and unions.

In 1993, he joined the AMWU as a National Industrial Officer, advocating for members before industrial courts and tribunals. He was called to the Victorian Bar in 1996, where he continued practicing in industrial and employment law.

In 1998, he became Senior Legal Officer for the CPSU’s Federal Office, holding the role for 24 years. He played a key role in advocacy, negotiations, and complex industrial proceedings across Commonwealth and State tribunals.

Commissioner Perica has also been actively involved in major policy and law reform, working closely with senior ACTU officers and serving as an ACTU nominee on the Committee of Industrial Legislation. His contributions have shaped key legislative reforms, including the Work Choices legislation, the Fair Work Act 2009, and the Fair Work Legislation Amendment (Secure Jobs, Better Pay) Act 2022.
